Muslim Professionals Association - Purpose
The Muslim community in Australia faces institutionalised discrimination that impedes their ability to convert high levels of education into employment outcomes, resulting in higher rates of unemployment, lower workforce participation rates and reduced earnings.
- Unemployment rate for Muslims in Australia is more than double the national average
- More than one third of Muslims have a weekly income of less than $400
- Muslim professionals believe they have limited employment prospects due to their religious beliefs, such as restrictions for women wearing hijab (head covering) and limited support to allow Muslims to perform their daily prayers
- Numerous reports of discrimination in workforce (“Islamophobia”), such as bias against foreign sounding names in job applications
MPA aims to address these issues by developing, growing and empowering Muslim professionals.
